Basketball is a favorite sport among our athletes. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball.
Basketball is the largest sport in Area 26, and one of the largest in Virginia. We have over 60 traditional and 20 unified teams, at levels from Beginner to Expert. The program is resuming play post COVID.
Our season runs from November to the end of March, and we have several tournaments, beginning in January, and culminating in our own separate State Championships
Note: COVID19 Waiver and proof of COVID19 vaccination are required for all participants. Athletes must also have current medical forms on file.
Coordinator: Elaine Tilton
Basketball events occur throughout the Area. Practice and game locations are provided by the coaches as they are finalized.
Specific tournament sites can be found on their schedule pages.
These will be published as they are made available.
Practices for 2022 have not yet begun. The tournament schedule is still tentative awaiting facility approval. More information will be posted here and noted through the newsletter.
Special Olympics Basketball Rules
Many of the rules for Basketball in Special Olympics are the same as High School (VHSL) and College, but there ARE some differences. Teams consist of up to 10 players at the Regional and State level of play. Area 26 allows 12 on a roster for local tournaments and practices. Click the box for the Rules manual.

PVI Clinic Action
Athlete Ace puts the ball where it belongs - with finesse...
A brand new program was introduced this year by the wonderful Hayfield Secondary School. They hosted a clinic for our BBall teams (similar to the Paul VI effort which takes place in February), which focused skills and drills on each player's level of play. This new program will be a GREAT annual addition to the Area Basketball Program.
Many thanks to the Hayfield Secondary Coaches, Casey Quigley. and their Boys and Girls Varsity Teams.
