Slow Pitch Softball is a spring/summer program. The season usually begins the last Saturday in March and runs for a minimum of 8 weeks. Practice/play is about 2 hours on Saturday morning beginning at 9 a.m. and ending by 1 p.m. Starting time varies from week to week. Each team plays two 60 minute games each week. Practice/play is at the same location week to week. Check our website calendar in March for the season schedule and location.

As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level. Area 26 has two divisions;

1. Training Division
2. Competitive Division

Softball is a Unified Special Olympic Sport where the roster contains a proportionate number of athletes and partners (a partners is an athletes without intellectual disabilities). A partner is required to file an Unified Partner Application (see forms page) with the Special Olympics Virginia—see Volunteer section of this website to learn more about volunteering. Go to the forms section to print an application.

Through a random draw, Softball Teams from Area 26 are selected to participate in the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games. The games are in Richmond on the second weekend of June.

Sign-up is by mail. Sometime in February Special Olympics in Northern Virginia mails a self-addressed postage paid flyer to all registered athletes with a list of the spring/summer sports programs. The athletes check off the sports they want to participate then mail back the flyer. If you are not a registered athlete then contact the Program Director (see contact info below) for information on our spring/summer programs. Please return these flyers as soon as possible after receiving them to assure your name is added to the roster.

If you are not a registered athlete then contact the Program Director (see contact info below) for information on our spring/summer programs.

For more information about our softball program send an e-mail to the Softball Coordinator. For general information about Northern Virginia Special Olympics, please contact the Summer Games Director.
