   MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

      2010 Summer Season Message

We completed another successful sports year and I want to thank all the dedicated
volunteers and sponsors who supported our athletes in Northern Virginia. The Area 26
Council remains focused on meeting its goals for the 2010/2011 season and welcomes your
suggestions. We want to continue to focus on fundraising, developing strategic partnerships
and recruiting new volunteers and athletes.

Summer games were held on June 12-13 in Richmond. We sent 128 athletes who represented
Area 26 on two Unified Softball teams, 12 in Bowling, 28 in Aquatics, 58 in Track and Field,
and 5 in Powerlifting. We have seven athletes who will be representing Area 26 in the
National Games in Nebraska this July. Katy Sanchez in Track and Field, Sean Kimball in
Powerlifting, Jordann Long and Heather Boncher in Swimming, and Laurie Ann Kehoe, Chris
Curtin and David Curtin in Golf will be going for the Gold.

During the summer most athletes will be taking some time off to get ready for our Fall Sports
of Bowling, Soccer and Cycling, but our Sailing team will be competing in local regattas as
well as going to Maryland and Rhode Island for Championship Regattas.

Our three global messengers: Brendan Hammeke, Khang Le, and Kirsten Stone promote our
programs by sharing their perspectives on the world of Special Olympics. If you are looking
for a person to speak about Special Olympics at any type of function, please contact us.

With financial support from ExxonMobil for a paid summer intern and equipment from the
United States Tennis Association and others, we have kicked off a summer tennis program.
Natalie Kirchner a rising sophomore at the University of Virginia has approximately 50
participating athletes who attend one or more of the 5 weekly practices in Reston, Fairfax
and Falls Church. The summer season wraps up in July with final practices and a July 24th
TennisFEST at Rutherford Park in Fairfax. On Thursday, July 29th parents and volunteers
interested in learning about and or helping out with the continuation of the tennis program
will meet to plan future tennis activities.

On July 1, 2020 new Council Members Kevin Battle, Eileen Oviatt and Kevin Ogletree, athlete
representative were elected to serve. I want to thank the following Council Members who

The Dance Committee, chaired by Pat Savage, is operating and organizing dances for the
new year. Several committees need volunteers so we can maintain and further develop our
support for the athletes. The quality of our programs depends on the support of our sponsors
and volunteers. You really can make a difference in the lives of our Special Olympics’
athletes. Please contact one or more of the following sport coordinators for more
information on how you can contribute to the success of each program, including

As a result of the efforts made by the Council and the fundraising committee, we continue
to raise funds in a very challenging economic environment. We would appreciate your
assistance with donations and especially business contacts for future fundraising
opportunities. We continue to strive to achieve our goal of having a sponsor and/or
fundraising event for every sport program.

It continues to be a privilege to work with this dedicated team of volunteers and serve
Special Olympics athletes by making all of our sports programs available. As always I
      appreciate your suggestions and comments.

      Sincerely,
